Homemade Hot Cocoa - (non dairy, vegan)

Homemade Hot Cocoa

(dairy free, gluten free, vegan)

 

Ingredients*:
 

4 cups milk (non-dairy alternative such as unsweetened almond or coconut milk)
4-5 heaping tablespoons of unsweetened cacao (or cocoa) powder

Sprinkle of cinnamon
1/2 cup of sugar, maple syrup, or honey - or 2 ripened bananas

1 teaspoon of gluten-free pure vanilla extract (optional)
Whipped cream or marshmallows (non-dairy, optional)

 

* I always use organic and fair-trade ingredients whenever possible.

 

Directions:

 

Mix milk with sugar using a wire whisk while heating in a pan on medium heat. If using bananas in place of sugar, mix well in blender first before adding to the milk.

 

Add unsweetened cacao powder and cinnamon, then mix well with a wire whisk. Continue to heat on medium until mixed well and heated thoroughly while beginning to steam.

 

Reduce heat to low and add the vanilla extract. Serve warm, adding optional toppings, if desired. 

 

Variations:

 

  • Serve with optional toppings, such as non-dairy whipped topping (SoDelicious CocoWhip, etc.) or vegan marshmallows (Dandies, etc.)

  • Add a little cayenne pepper for a spicy flavor.

  • Mix with coffee for a mocha drink.
